Change From Student to Visitor

If you want to remain in Canada as a visitor after your studies, apply to change conditions / extend your stay as a visitor before your study permit expires. Approval may lead to a visitor record with a new authorized stay date. A visitor record is not a TRV. As a visitor you generally cannot work, and longer study usually needs a study permit again.

Overview

After studies, some people need lawful time in Canada without studying or working—for example, wrapping up personal affairs or waiting for another pathway. That usually means applying to change to visitor status before the study permit expires and, if approved, holding a visitor record.

Common situations

Program finished and I am not applying for PGWP

If you will not work, a visitor record may fit. Apply before study permit expiry and show funds plus temporary intent.

Eligible for PGWP but undecided

Do not default to visitor status if you need work authorization. PGWP timing rules are strict; get advice before choosing visitor-only.

Waiting for a spouse’s application or travel plans

Visitor status can keep you lawful inside Canada, but it does not authorize work and is not a travel visa.

Study permit already expired

Visitor record vs study permit

A visitor record does not let you continue as a student. If you still need to study at a DLI beyond visitor limits, extend or restore as a student instead.

  • Stop relying on student work hours once you are only a visitor.

Frequently asked questions

Should I apply for PGWP instead of visitor status?
If you are eligible for a PGWP and want to work, that is usually a different decision than becoming a visitor. Choosing visitor status means you generally cannot work. Get advice if both options are open.
Can I keep studying while waiting for visitor status?
If you filed a study permit extension on time, different rules apply. If you are changing to visitor, plan around the end of authorized study—do not assume visitor processing continues student rights.
Is a visitor record the same as a TRV?
No. A visitor record extends or documents stay inside Canada. A TRV is for seeking re-entry if you need a visa.
Can I work on a visitor record?
No. Visitors are not authorized to work.
What if my study permit already expired?
