Study permit process overview

Below is a general overview of the study permit process for Canada:

Apply to a designated learning institution (DLI)

Submit an application to a Canadian school (high school, college, or university) that is on the official list of Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs).

Receive a letter of acceptance (LOA)

Once admitted, you will receive a Letter of Acceptance from the DLI. This is required to apply for a study permit.

Apply for a study permit (and TRV/eTA if required)

Submit your study permit application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

• Pay the study permit application fee and biometrics fee (if applicable).
• Provide all required supporting documents (financial proof, letter of explanation, LOA, etc.).
• You must not be inadmissible to Canada, meaning you must meet Canada's medical, criminality, and security requirements

Await a decision and prepare for arrival

If your application is approved, you will receive documentation to travel to Canada and obtain your study permit at the port of entry.

If your application is refused you may decide whether to re-apply or explore other avenues. If reapplying make sure you fully understand the reasons for your initial refusal and that you have concrete evidence to address them in your new application.
