Overview
Many graduates need to know one thing: can I keep working after I apply for a PGWP?
Sometimes yes—but only if specific IRCC conditions were already true when you submitted the application. “I applied for a PGWP” alone is not work authorization.
Common situations
Eligible graduate with a still-valid study permit
If you meet IRCC’s Help Centre conditions at filing, you may work full-time while the PGWP is processed.
Study permit about to expire
Coordinate completion documents and filing so the study permit is still valid on submission day whenever that is required for work-while-waiting.
Pending study permit extension only
Be careful. Maintained status from an extension application is not the same as holding a valid study permit document for every IRCC work rule. Confirm before you rely on continued employment.
Never eligible for off-campus work
If you could not work off campus during studies, you generally should not assume PGWP work-while-waiting authorization.
IRCC conditions (confirm live Help Centre text)
IRCC’s Help Centre answer states you can work full-time while waiting for a PGWP decision if, at the time you submitted the application, all of the following applied:
- you had a valid study permit
- you had completed your program of study
- you were eligible to work off campus without a work permit
- you did not work off campus more than the permitted hours during academic sessions (IRCC’s published limit—confirm the live page)
If IRCC has issued interim documentation (such as a WP-EXT for PGWP letter in applicable cases), follow the Help Centre instructions about continued authorization and how to request proof if needed.
Filing timing and study-permit validity drive whether you can work while waiting. Tamara can help you map the sequence before completion day.
Maintained status vs work authorization
These ideas are related but not identical:
| Concept | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| Maintained status | You may remain in Canada after a permit expires if you applied to extend/change before expiry |
| Work while waiting for PGWP | Separate, condition-based authorization under IRCC’s PGWP / R186-type rules |
| Off-campus student work | Ends with program completion for most students until a new basis applies |
Do not use “maintained status” as a slogan for full-time post-graduation work unless the PGWP work-while-waiting conditions are actually met.
Practical filing sequence
- Confirm PGWP eligibility.
- Get completion proof from your school as soon as it is available.
- Ensure study-permit validity (or another IRCC-accepted basis) for the filing day.
- Submit the PGWP within IRCC’s post-completion deadline.
- Keep submission confirmation + study permit + completion letter for employers.
- Work only if every Help Centre condition is clearly satisfied.

Common mistakes
- Working in the gap between completion and PGWP submission
- Filing after the study permit is invalid and assuming work rights continue
- Exceeding off-campus hours during studies, then claiming work-while-waiting
- Confusing visitor status or restoration with PGWP bridging work
- Showing only a fee receipt without completion and study-permit evidence

Before you apply
- Confirmed PGWP eligibility before relying on work-while-waiting
- Confirmed your study permit will be valid on the day you submit the PGWP
- Obtained completion proof and filed within IRCC’s post-completion window
- Confirmed you were eligible to work off campus and did not exceed hour limits
- Saved the PGWP application submission confirmation for employers
- Stopped or paused work if you do not clearly meet all Help Centre conditions
Frequently asked questions
- Can every PGWP applicant work while waiting?
- No. IRCC lists specific conditions that must all apply at submission. Missing one condition means you may lack authorization even if the application is in process.
- Do I need a valid study permit when I apply?
- IRCC’s Help Centre work-while-waiting answer requires that you had a valid study permit at the time you submitted the PGWP application. Plan filing before the study permit becomes invalid whenever possible.
- What if I only have maintained status from a study permit extension?
- Many advisers treat maintained status from a pending study-permit extension as insufficient for the ‘valid study permit at PGWP filing’ work-while-waiting condition. Confirm IRCC guidance and consider waiting for the new study permit before filing the PGWP if timing still allows.
- When must I stop working after I finish my program?
- Off-campus work authorization tied to being a student generally ends when you complete your program / receive completion confirmation, until a new authorization (such as PGWP work-while-waiting) applies. Do not keep working in a gap without a clear IRCC basis.
- What proof can I show an employer?
- Typically your study permit, proof of program completion, and PGWP application submission confirmation. IRCC may also issue interim letters in some cases—follow the Help Centre instructions if you need proof.

- No. This guide summarizes official IRCC guidance. Outcomes depend on your full facts and officer assessment.
