In June 2022, Canada announced changes to the Super Visa program for Parents and Grandparents.
A Super Visa is a Canadian temporary resident visa that allows a much longer stay in Canada to certain categories (Parents/Grandparents of a Canadian Citizen/PR), compared to a common rule of a 6-month stay per entry (unless authorized otherwise by a border officer).
- Starting July 4, 2022, your loved ones who are Super Visa holders may be allowed to stay in Canada for up to 5 years per entry. (Currently, the maximum stay per entry is 2 years.)
- Those already in Canada on a valid Super Visa, can request an extension of their stay for up to 2 years at a time.
- Finally, IRCC plans to allow certain international medical insurance companies to provide coverage to Super Visa applicants in the future. At the moment, a Super Visa Parent/Grandparent is required to have a medical insurance from a Canadian provider. The list of approved international companies is yet to be announced.
To apply, see the IRCC official website or reach out to me for a consultation.
💡As a reminder, parents/grandparents visiting Canada on Super Visa, are not allowed to work. Certain types of volunteering would also require a work permit.
Canada allows a limited number of parents/grandparents to be sponsored, to live and work in Canada, however, the program is currently closed and there has not been any news yet as to when/if the PGP program will reopen in 2022. With the current backlog of over 2 million applications, and the new rules allowing parents to stay for up to 5 years at a time, it is reasonable that IRCC is not in a rush to re-open the PGP Sponsorship program.
Are you planning to bring your parents to Canada? Do you think the PGP Sponsorship program will reopen in 2022? I’d live to hear your thoughts. Message me at bulantseva.immigration@gmail.com.
